Hillside Primary School

English

At Hillside Primary School, our English curriculum is engaging and enriches children’s experiences, supporting their development in writing, reading, and grammar. Lessons are designed to provide a comprehensive and cohesive learning experience that integrates with the topics covered in other subjects, including History, Geography, and Science. This holistic approach ensures that children not only develop their English skills but also enhance their understanding of the world around them through interconnected learning.

The writing component of our English curriculum is structured as a progressive journey, allowing children to build upon their existing skills. We begin by introducing vocabulary from the texts being studied, that enriches children’s cultural capital and ensures they are equipped with the language necessary to articulate their thoughts and ideas effectively.

As children engage with topic-related books, they are encouraged to develop their reading comprehension skills. These texts are chosen to reflect the subjects being studied, providing a rich context for discussion and analysis. Through guided reading sessions, children learn to identify key themes, make inferences, and draw connections between the text and their own experiences. This not only enhances their comprehension but also encourages critical thinking and a love for reading.

To support children in their independent writing, we incorporate essential grammar features that are relevant to their writing tasks. Grammar is integrated into lessons that are structured around themed texts. This approach ensures that grammar is not taught in isolation but rather as a tool for effective communication.

Children are provided with opportunities to plan their independent writing. This planning phase is crucial, as it allows them to organise their thoughts and structure their work coherently. Children are supported to develop pieces of writing that reflect the purpose and target audience, encouraging them to think critically about the message they wish to convey. Teachers provide constructive feedback before children edit their work, allowing them to produce a piece of writing they can be proud of. This creates a sense of ownership and achievement, as well as instilling a growth mindset.

Our English curriculum provides a meaningful context for learning that prepares our children for future academic success and lifelong learning. It improves their confidence and creativity, empowering them to express themselves effectively and thoughtfully in all areas of their lives.
